Away from the norm ? Probably Yes

Many a times, if i dont like the comments on my blog, i generally brush them away. However here is one such comment to which i think i need to give a response. This comment was made for my "review" of RDB. So this is the comment:

"Yes Watch it, to loose your brains! This movie is a reflection of India's poor tastes and appreciation of the mediocrity. No intelligent person can stand this movie."

Now there are a few points here. Firstly what is mediocrity ? It is a highly relative term. We say something is bad, only when we see and appreciate something else. That being the case, the words good, bad, mediocre etc etc are highly realtive. Now what was the yardstick used to judge this ? Hollywood films ? Barring a very very minor few rest everything else is american jingoistic crap. Now firstly, as kamalhasan has been shouting hoarse from the rooftop for ages and ages, there is no point in comparing the filmmaking style and film content with any other film industry in the world. What needs to be compared is the technicalities with which a movie is made. So this effectively throws out the word mediocrity. Yes it might be true that we may be light years behind hollywood in terms of using AVID editing for sound {kamal once again has done that too in virumandi!}, or using sync sound { remember manirathnam and ayudha ezhuthu? }, but what matters most is that we make movies for our satisfaction, for a three hour deviation from the rigmaroles of life.
So voicing out an opinion that it is a reflection of poor taste and mediocrity, is totally uncalled for. Probably in your blog sir, but definitely not in MY blog.
There is a school of thought that says that all people who go abroad to study are cowards and dull and un-intelligent people as they were unable to compete and get a seat in institutes like IISc or IIT or IIM. And please dont get back to me saying this country has lots of reservations and etc etc. Aren't people studying there ? Now whether i am subscribing to that school of thought is not the issue here. What matters here is that we cannot generalize such issues right ? Similarly we cannot generalize things saying "no intelligent person can stand this movie". What is intelligence ? A farmer knows how to predict rains just by looking up to the sky. Do we software-blokes in cozy airconditioned comfort, have even an iota of such knowledge ? Now please dont tell me that we have "intelligence" about software. "A bug-free program is an abstract concept" so goes the saying. Will we accept a car that has a manufacturing defect ?

Perhaps one of the most important things we miss is the notion of constructive criticism. In fact, RDB is not perfect. The director takes too much cinemtic liberties in the second half. Point it out to him and try to make him understand, that would seperate the wheat from chaff. If we blindly go upto him and tell him that he does nothing but crap, all you would get is a cold shoulder !
Finally Mr.Balaji no nation is perfect, it has to be made perfect ! {karan in RDB}. And i am open to any sort of debate/discussion/fight on the yardsticks for mediocrity and intelligence !

    Kya baat hai Mr.Mera-Desh-Mahaan,

"Intelligence is a general mental capability that involves the ability to reason, plan, solve problems, think abstractly, comprehend ideas and language, and learn. In psychology, the study of intelligence is related to the study of personality but is not the same as creativity, personality, character, or wisdom."
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intelligence

First of all, try to get an attitude in life. Then think of an intelligence to match with it !
Using yardsticks which compares hollywood to tollywood is not acceptable to you Sir, but you very happily try to put across a school of thought that is yet again an yardstick comparing something non-Indian to Indian. So next time before you come out to predict the rains by looking at the sky, make sure you look around the world and see if there are people who can predict it in a better way. Intelligence is much more than stagnant, chauvinistic perceptions !!!

And intelligence is ofcourse not commenting on blogs like yours !!! But sometimes I like kicking the shit dude ;-)

Note: People who sit in comfy offices are intelligent if and when they know how not to be a frog in the well !!!

    Hi Shyam,

In the first place I am very sorry if I had hurt you in anyway with my comment. I had read your "Watch it" review even before I watched RDB. Actually I was very eager to see it for sometime. But when I did get an opportunity to watch it, I was very disappointed to see (what I believe is) the cavelier attitude with which this movie has handled issues like MIG crashes, attitude of today's youth towards the country, defence procurement and even about the patriotism of Muslims. My comment on your blog was an act of frustration. Anyway I still feel RDB is a pretty bad movie and I'm amazed that this movie is being hailed by the media. Killing the defence minister for a MIG crash represents cynical thinking, which is exactly what was pointed out by Doon School Head Master Kranti Bajpai in his article in Outlook Magazine.

I'm also sorry about your feelings towards Indian students in US. Hope my comment didn't force you to make such opinions.

And finally, thanks for the sudden burst of profile views which I have got because of your link :) Again sorry and no hard feelings please.

    Balaji.

akash: when you quote some stupid dictionary definition of intelligence that shows how much "intelligent" you are !
and no im no patriot nor do i spew jingoistic crap. that once again shows your "intelligence". chauvnistic perceptions indeed !! i think you need to use your "intelligence" to first understand the point i am trying to drive here about generalizations.

balaji : no man.there is nothing called hurt or whatsoever.so dont apologise.just that it did not quite ring a bell with that kind of sweeping generalizations !
as for increased traffic well the whole world loves to see heated discussions i suppose ;-)
and then again i am not making any kind of comments towards students in us or whereever.i am trying to highlight the trouble with making sweeping generalizations.
when you say you are disappointed with the movie, that is a fact. when you say the potrayal is bad that again is a fact.but when you say no intelligent person can stand it, that is a generalization and IMHO that might not be true always !

    Duh !!

****when you quote some stupid dictionary definition of intelligence that shows how much "intelligent" you are !****

I admit. Indeed a dictionary is stupid enough when its seen in context with your "Intelligence" and so we can safely conclude that dictionaries apart, this new world has a man who spat out words which redefined the world of languages and it's meanings !

Generlizations ?!?! Indeed so. It is like saying all crows are black but a few are grey and hence all teapots need not have a black bottom.

So much so for your so called "intelligence". School of thoughts on US/Abroad universities and Indian students -> Neat invention on your part. I am still amused you are so intelligent (In a non-dictionary manner that is !! :-) )

    Get a life bloke !!!

With the thought that you have decided not to comment on this blog anymore, I think I may have make statement rather than having questions in it.

So in that school of thought which thinks Intelligent people only go to IIT , IIM and yeah IISc ...there should be classifications that IIT-ians are more intelligent that those at IIM (Mumbai Dabbavallahs were considered fabulous by these lot --d'oh) and IISc as they got into IIT when they were much younger...

The above point implies , Shyam super ego would not subscribe to this thought for he could not get into IIT or even Engineering ( Shyam cannot point out reservations due to his own comment ..) ...I think I should stop now...for this going to attract a lot of abuse from the "Intelligent-Being" ;)

and that would make my day ;)

Good one , Good use of alter ego ;)

Acting like a kid ? Why did you decide that I'm not a kid ;).

All those who are not biased would agree that the first personal attack was launched by the self proclaimed "super intelligent being" and Balaji did show his maturity when he apologized.

Ram/Shyam - Jekyll or Hyde ...it does not matter who responds . The facts are obvious .

    Chuckles,etc.

    Ram:

"who is this idiot da ? "

Well, obviously this is a "not-so-intelligent" person(as per the smart dictionary compiled by the so called intelligent Shyam)who can vouch for one small fact-I prefer being an idiot and a kid who does NOT prescribe to shyam's disgusting school of thoughts nor care for his supporters like Ram who have all the time on earth to remain grown-up and spend all of their time trying to understand a pathetic moron who knows how "intelligently" he landed in IISc ;-):p

There-is-no-point-in-knowing-me (It is a pity you do not deserve to know kids or idiots like me :-))-> your mighty loss )
