IR Vs ARR

I have seen quite a lot of Illayaraja Vs A.R.Rahman fights on the internet. I will contribute my mite to that fights now.

Let's focus on one style of music composition, Jazz.

Now, let us see what the "King" Illayaraja has to offer in a Jazz based song

The above song is from the Movie Tik Tik Tik.

Now, let us see what the contender to the throne A.R.Rahman, has to offer.

The above song is from the movie Iruvar.

But wait, actually the contender outdoes the king with this song. A totally dud movie called Kadhal Virus, pathetic video, and yet, Rahman gives out an amazing song.

I have to give my verdict here. Rahman wins hands down, especially if you take his composition from the movie Kadhal Virus into consideration.

    well, my personal thought is that ARR and Raja shouldn't be compared - aren't their styles too different? isn't it like asking which is a better hunter, shark or tiger? so depending on what style you choose, one of them is going to win hands down. So if you ask who is better with western music ARR will win hands down, but when it comes to a question of evoking your emotions be it sadness/happiness/whatever through music don't you think Raja is on a different plane? For eg the violin piece in aboova sagothargal (Onna nenechu), singaravelan.. etc make u sad anytime you hear it - you don't have to see the video to find out that it is a sad song.
    Isn't this what music is supposed to do?

    maybe we should shortlist a list of styles and analyze this a bit more :-).

    Hi Shyam,

    Since you helpfully give a link to this page in your mails, I have decided to come here and troll my best.

    Here is my vote in this contest. It goes to ... G Ramanathan! How about C R Subbaraman? Or P Dakshinamurty? Or Papanasam Sivan? Seriously, there is such unbelievable beauty in the really old songs that people are missing out on! Just listen to `maayame naan ariyen' from Missiyamma, or `pazhagum tamizhe' from Paarttiban kanavu, or any of thousand such songs!

    Though I would say that ARR has real class!

    Hi Suresh;
    Yes, I do agree that most of the old songs do sound pleasing to the ear !

    If you note, I was trying to contribute to the IR Vs ARR fights ;-)
